Decorative cables at Flexform


Cables are now being considered a design element of traditional or modern light fittings. This applies to table, floor, or ceiling luminaries. Flexform manufactures specifically to the designers concept and for the OEM industry.

Braided
Textile braid is applied to BS, Harmonised and UL approved flex. The cable can be prepared into cord sets with moulded plugs to the national standard and presented ready for connection. Textured braids in silk, Rayon or Polyester are available. Braid colours and patterns are numerous, to match the concept and fittings.

Twisted
Twin and Triple braided cable reflects the period and quality of the light fitting. Cable is supplied in bulk or can be prepared into lead-sets ready for connection. Twisted, coloured cables in glossy PVC are also offered without braid applied.

Clear
See through, crystal clear flex is available in two or three cores. Bright tinned conductors are visible through the insulation and sheath.

Core colours :
2 cores : brown, blue ; 3 cores : brown, blue, green/yellow.
Outer braid colours :
To customers specification. Stock colours are brown, black, old gold, havanna, grey, burgundy and silver.
Performance :
Copper wire stranded as class 5. PVC insulated flexible PVC outer with textile decorative braid. Limited abrasion resistance of rayon outer braiding. Can be increased using polyester thread although not as fine in finish.
Applications :
These cables are designed for period style, restoration work on lighting and electrical appliances. Also suitable for modern light fittings which are not complimented by plain PVC flex.

To BS6500 and harmonised code HO3VVF as far applicable. Individual cores of plain copper strands PVC/PVC double insulated to radial thickness as standard table 15. Braided, laid up as a twin or triple flexible cable.
Insulation colours:
2 cores : brown, blue.
3 cores : brown, blue, green/yellow.
Outer braid colours:
To customer specification. Stock colours are : brown, black, old gold, havanna, grey, burgundy, silver.
Performance:
These PVC/PVC double insulated cables are flexible and robust. Manufactured Following recognised standards they are designed to replicate cable of a past period and is for decoration only. Rayon braid has limited abrasion resistance.
Applications:
The twisted flex is especially suited for use with table and floor lamps, some rise and fall fittings and small domestic appliances : early radios, extension speakers and clocks. Contact Flexform regards suspension weight for lamps

Braided twin PVC "UL" specification

Operating temperatures:
+ 60oC maximum outer jacket temperature
Operating voltage:

Relevant standard:
This cable is constructed utilising "UL" style 1015, 600 V, 105o C cores with secondary reinforcing (UL grade) PVC jacket. A decorative braid is (individually) applied prior to twisting.
Insulation colours:
2 cores : black, white
3 cores: black, white, green
Outer braid colours:
As for BS type above
Performance:
This cable performs as a flexible cord with limited abrasion resistance relative to the rayon braid.
Applications:
To replicate cords and pendant drops of a period nature, or as contrasting enhancement to modern light fitting. Contact Flexform with regards to suspension weight for lamps.

Thinner Flex

+105o C maximum outer insulation temperature

Relevant standard:
Construction of the core is tinned copper strands insulated with 180o C FEP Teflon® to ' IMQ ' standard ref. A2641. A reinforcing layer of 105oC PVC is extruded prior to braiding and twisting.
Insulation colours:
2 cores : blue, brown.
3 cores : blue, brown, green/yellow.
Outer braid colours:
To customer specification. Stock colours are : brown, black, old gold, havanna, grey, burgundy, silver.
Performance:
This high specification flex utilises polymers of a very durable nature with excellent temperature and cut through resistance. The product has been designed to provide a reduced cable OD enabling it to easily pass through the grommets and tubing of light fittings. Rayon braid has limited abrasion resistance.
Applications:
Lighting pendants, table and floor lamps, rise and fall pendants. Consult Flexform with regards to suspension weight for lamps.

Performance:
Class 5, flexible tinned copper conductors rubber insulated type EI1. 2 or 3 cores twisted together with fillers. Textile or nylon braided.
Applications:
Primarily for mains voltage rise and fall pendants. It is highly flexible, light and pliable. The nylon braid is abrasion resistant and durable through pulley systems.

Performance:
Both oval and round cables have 180o C FEP insulated tinned conductors (not phase marked) both have a resistance of 26.7 OHM/km and insulation resistance of 2700 M.OHM/km available with 80oC or 105oC jacket. This construction is robust and with excellent cut through resistance.
Applications:
Normally as connecting flex to contemporary pendant and desk lamps

New product. Constructed of stranded tinned copper wires to BS6360 class 2. FEP insulated and jacket 180o C operating temperature.
Transparent 0.225 mm nominal insulation thickness.

Both cores and jacket transparent.
Performance:
The cable has a clear insulation stable up to 200o C. Tested to 6kV, 2kVdielectric test core to core. Jacket elongation at break > 250%.
Applications:
Wiring of glass and metal chandelier arms to the lamp holder. Where space is strictly limited and cable is subject to heat. FEP offers excellent cut through resistance when being worked. As it is transparent the visibility is negligible within glass ware.

Although flexible regard must be given to any over stressing of the flex which could distort the decorative metallic tape.

This cable comprises of ' FEP ' based conductor to reduce 'OD' and offer both cut through resistance and temperature withstand. Example is braided in bright metallic tape for effect and twisted into a 2 or 3 core cable. (limited abrasion resistance restricts use to pendant drops).
Applications:
Both metallic twisted and round decorative are use generally for effect in the lighting industry. Patterned textile braids can be applied to suspensions and cables to disguise function and create balance. See design page.

Performance:
Suspension cable are manufactured as a composite cable composing of a central strain wire around which are the conductors and filler. Generally manufactured in PVC and to order. Typical sizes and suspension weights are contained in the table below the strain wire within the cables is to be anchored in such a way as to take up the entire weight of the fitting in suspension. The conductors therefore are free of any strain other than their own weight which should be held by means of an outer jacket cable clamp at the ceiling fixture
