FAQs

There are two ways to verify Flexform’s UL certification-

  1. UL Product iQ –  UL maintains a public database at iq.ul.com where you can search by manufacturer name or UL file number to see all certified constructions, their scope and current status. Flexform’s file numbers are listed in the Compliance section of our website.
  2. Cable Marking – UL-certified cables carry the UL mark directly on the cable jacket or on a label attached to the reel. For cables certified to both US and Canadian standards, the mark appears as cULus. The marking also includes the cord type designation, voltage rating, conductor size and temperature rating all of which must match the relevant UL 62 construction. If you are importing Flexform Cable into the US and need documentation for customs or a local inspector, we can provide the relevant UL file number and certification as part of our standard trade documentation.

This, however does not extend to Braided Twisted Flexes. Although we produce the product with UL cores. This does not imply certification of the consiruction for use as an appliance cord.

These three marks represent different scopes of certification-

UL listed — The product has been fully tested and certified for direct end -use in the United States. It can be sold, installed and used as a finished product. This is the highest level of certification for finished cables.

cUL listed — The ”c” prefix means the product is also certified to the equivalent Canadian Standards Association (CSA) requirements, specifically CSA C22.2 No.49, which covers flexible cords and cables. A product marked ”cULus” is simultaneously approved for both USA and Canada.

UL Recognised — This applies to components (such as individual insulated conductors or raw materials) intended for use inside a larger certified assembly. Recognised components are not approved for direct end-use as standalone products. If you are buying cable to incorporate into a luminaire that will itself carry a UL listing, Recognised-level cable may suffice but for the cable itself to be sold independently in North America, UL Listed is required.

Most pendant light fittings are designed to support lightweight shades only, typically up to 1–3 kg. The exact weight depends on the ceiling fixing, lampholder and cable used. Heavier pendants should always be supported independently and not rely on the cable alone.

Festoon lighting is a decorative lighting system made up of evenly spaced bulbs connected along a flexible cable. It is commonly used indoors and outdoors to create a warm, ambient atmosphere in residential, commercial, and event spaces.

For our braided and non-braided flex, the minimum order quantity (MOQ) is 10m. We usually sell our cable in drums of 100m but have alternative price breaks at 50m, 25m and 10m respectively. Prices available upon request.

For our lamps, fittings and accessories, the MOQ is 1 unit.

Yes. Almost every type of cable can be braided, provided the dimensions fit within the constraints of our braiding machines.

We can also produce custom cables, manufactured to a customer’s design specification. These jobs will be priced as a made-to-order job.

Applying heat shrink, adhesive tape or superglue are effective methods for securing the braid when the cable is cut. This can usually be concealed within the fittings.

Class 1 Appliances

In Class I appliances, the user is protected by basic insulation and an earth connection. This provides two levels of protection between the user and the electrical current. If any of the following apply, it is a Class I appliance:

  • If the plug has a fuse,
  • If it is made of metal,
  • If it has a three core cable,
  • If the plug has a metal Earth pin.

Class II Appliances

In Class II appliances, two layers of insulation protect the user, therefore Class II appliances are known as Double Insulated. These appliances do not require a separate earth connection. The following apply to Class II appliances:

  • The case is plastic,
  • There is a double box symbol on the rating plate.

3 core cable is comprised of live, neutral and earth conductors, suitable for ‘Appliance Class I’ (connectivity to earth).

2 core cable is comprised of live and neutral conductors only, suitable for ‘Appliance Class II’ (no connectivity to earth).

It is important to check your Appliance Class with your qualified electrical contractor.

See ‘What is the difference between Appliance Class I and II?’ for more information.
